THE PIECES Summer 2026 Tour Announcement

After years of dreaming, designing, engineering, testing, failing, rebuilding, and reimagining, The Pieces is finally heading out into the world.

This summer, Aloft Circus Arts premieres a new large-scale contemporary circus work built around eight massive interlocking structures that transform, balance, collapse, and rebuild in real time. Part architecture experiment, part trust exercise, part high-risk circus performance, The Pieces explores the tension between independence and interdependence — and what becomes possible when people choose to carry weight together.

Created by Shayna Swanson and developed over more than a decade, the project began with a simple fascination: how individual elements rely completely upon one another to create something larger, stronger, and unexpectedly beautiful. Since then, the concept has evolved through years of fabrication, experimentation, workshops, residencies, and public development performances in both the United States and Europe.

The work combines contemporary circus, physical theater, object manipulation, and original sound design created from the structures themselves — metal ringing, scraping, resonating, and becoming part of the score.

This summer marks the first full public tour of the project, beginning with preview performances in Berlin before the official world premiere at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival with Underbelly Circus Hub.

All that testing and rebuilding is exactly why this tour is going to be something special. I've been following the engineering updates and can't wait to see the final version live—check out https://ai-for-animation.com
